Their surge in popularity was born when GI's brought these back from the War, realising the quality and versitility they bartered energetically for them and many, many found their way back to North America from the 1940's.
The body is folded steel, the pins are steel, the lock is steel. These things last a long time and the fact that many of the originals are still in use today is proof of their longivity. Why 'Black Cat?...that was the particular 'run' of Mercator knives that happened to be available after the Second World War, these were the ones that the GI's saw and wanted and without knowing the Makers name, they simply refered to them as those 'Black Cat' knives. The name stuck as it became intimately associated with Mercator (Otter) knife as well becoming a by-word for quality.
